EAST LONDON - BEACHES

I could not fail to mention one of East London star attraction, namely Gonubie Beach. Situated just 25 kilometres north of the city on the Gonubie River it has achieved Blue Flag status, a prestigious international award only giving to beaches that meet stringent standards in environment protection, facilities provided and safety equipment and personal on hand. Flanked by a estuary and bluff on the north and a rocky headland on the south this protected beach draws visitors from though out South Africa. It has a very long scenic wooden boardwalk connecting it from the main parking lot all the way to the main beach, on the way it passes man made tidal pools and lush native vegetation. Gonubie is connected to East London by the N2 freeway which makes it just a twenty minute drive from the CBD.

East London's most popular beach is Nahoon Beach, named after a local Xhosa chief, is home to the East London Surf Live Saving Club. It has kilometres of un crowded, unpolluted sand to the north and a rocky bluff to the south which has a constructed walk way reaching all the way round to Nahoon Corner. Nahoon Beach is renown through out the South African surfing community for producing some spectacular waves and is the venue of many national surfing competitions. The Nahoon River flows into the sea creating an estuary which is a favourite amongst the local fishermen and provides safe bathing for those that do not want to brave the surf.

Orient Beach can be found at the southern end of the Esplanade in the Quigney suburb of East London. It's close proximately to the hotels and shops on the Esplanades make it a favourite amongst the many inland tourists that visit the city each year. Been protected by the breakwater's of the harbour the surf is normally quite gentle here and provides safe bathing, it also has lifeguards on duty. Two large circular swimming pools, with slides, surrounded by large areas of green lawns provide amble space for the thousands of tourists that descend on the beach during peak holiday season. There is a refreshment kiosk (in season) and many restaurants close by to satisfy the hunger after a refreshing swim, changing facilities are also provided.
